Navagrah Stotram by Vyasa Muni


जपाकुसुमसङ्काशं काश्यपेयं महाद्युतिम् ।
तमोऽरिं सर्वपापघ्नं प्रणतोऽस्मि दिवाकरम् ॥१॥

japākusumasaṅkāśaṃ kāśyapeyaṃ mahādyutim |
tamo’riṃ sarvapāpaghnaṃ praṇato’smi divākaram || 1 ||

I pray to the Sun, the day-maker, destroyer of all sins, the enemy of darkness, of great brilliance, the descendent of Kaashyapa, the one who shines like the japaa flower.


दधिशङ्खतुषाराभं क्षीरोदार्णवसम्भवम् ।
नमामि शशिनं सोमं शम्भोर्मुकुटभूषणम् ॥२॥

dadhiśaṅkhatuṣārābhaṃ kṣīrodārṇavasambhavam |
namāmi śaśinaṃ somaṃ śambhormukuṭabhūṣaṇam || 2 ||


I pray to the Moon who shines coolly like curds or a white shell, who arose from the ocean of milk, who has a hare on him, Soma, who is the ornament of Shiva's hair.


धरणीगर्भसम्भूतं विद्युत्कान्तिसमप्रभम् ।
कुमारं शक्तिहस्तं च मङ्गलं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥३॥

dharaṇīgarbhasambhūtaṃ vidyutkāntisamaprabham |
kumāraṃ śaktihastaṃ ca maṅgalaṃ praṇamāmyaham || 3 ||


I pray to Mars, born of Earth, who shines with the same brilliance as lightning, the young man who carries a spear.


प्रियङ्गुकलिकाश्यामं रूपेणाप्रतिमं बुधम् ।
सौम्यं सौम्यगुणोपेतं तं बुधं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥४॥

priyaṅgukalikāśyāmaṃ rūpeṇāpratimaṃ budham |
saumyaṃ saumyaguṇopetaṃ taṃ budhaṃ praṇamāmyaham || 4 ||


I pray to Mercury, dark like the bud of millet, of unequaled beauty, gentle and agreeable.


देवानांच ऋषीणांच गुरुं काञ्चनसन्निभम् ।
बुद्धिभूतं त्रिलोकेशं तं नमामि बृहस्पतिम् ॥५॥

devānāṃca ṛṣīṇāṃca guruṃ kāñcanasannibham |
buddhibhūtaṃ trilokeśaṃ taṃ namāmi bṛhaspatim || 5 ||


I pray to Jupiter, the teacher of gods and rishis, intellect incarnate, lord of the three worlds.


हिमकुन्दमृणालाभं दैत्यानां परमं गुरुम् ।
सर्वशास्त्रप्रवक्तारं भार्गवं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥६॥

himakundamṛṇālābhaṃ daityānāṃ paramaṃ gurum |
sarvaśāstrapravaktāraṃ bhārgavaṃ praṇamāmyaham || 6 ||


I pray to Venus, the ultimate preceptor of demons, promulgator of all learning, who shines like the fiber of snow-white jasmine.


नीलाञ्जनसमाभासं रविपुत्रं यमाग्रजम् ।
छायामार्तण्डसम्भूतं तं नमामि शनैश्चरम् ॥७॥

nīlāñjanasamābhāsaṃ raviputraṃ yamāgrajam |
chāyāmārtaṇḍasambhūtaṃ taṃ namāmi śanaiścaram || 7 ||


I pray to Saturn, the slow-moving, born of Shade and Sun, the elder brother of Yama, the offspring of Sun, he who has the appearance of black collyrium.


अर्धकायं महावीर्यं चन्द्रादित्यविमर्दनम् ।
सिंहिकागर्भसम्भूतं तं राहुं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥८॥

ardhakāyaṃ mahāvīryaṃ candrādityavimardanam |
siṃhikāgarbhasambhūtaṃ taṃ rāhuṃ praṇamāmyaham || 8 ||


I pray to Rahu, having half a body, of great bravery, the One who eclipses the Moon and the Sun, born of Simhikaa.


पलाशपुष्पसङ्काशं तारकाग्रहमस्तकम् ।
रौद्रं रौद्रात्मकं घोरं तं केतुं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥९॥

palāśapuṣpasaṅkāśaṃ tārakāgrahamastakam |
raudraṃ raudrātmakaṃ ghoraṃ taṃ ketuṃ praṇamāmyaham || 9 ||


I pray to Ketu, who has the appearance of Palaasha flower, the head of stars and planets, fierce and terrifying.

Chandra mantras

Chandra moola mantra with beeja syllables

 OM SHRAAM SHRIIM SHRAUM CHANDRAAYA NAMAHA

 

Born while churning the milk ocean.

 

Chandra gayatri mantra

 OMM KSHIIRA PUTRAAYA VIDMAHE

AMRITA TATTVAAJA DHIIMAHI

TANNO CHANDRAH PRACHODAYAAT

 

Kshiira – milk

Putra – son

Tattva – essence (one whose essence is amrita)

 

Translation: “Om. Let us meditate on the glorious son of milk, the glowing Moon. May that Chandra, the essence of nectar, inspire and illumine our mind and understanding.”

 

 

For Chandra or Moon related problems and during the dasa or antardasa of Moon:

 1. Worship the ruling deity Gauri.

2. Recite Annapuurna stotram.

3. Japa of Moon’s moola mantra: 10000 times in 40 days.

4. Recite the Chandra stotra:

Dadhi Shankha tushaarabham kshiiro darnava sambhavam
Namaami shashinam somam shambhor mukuta bhushanam

 5. Charity: Donate cow’s milk or rice on Monday.

6. Fasting: On Mondays.

7. Pooja: Devi pooja on Monday.

8. Rudraksha: Wear 2 mukhi Rudraksha.

 

Propitiation of the Moon (Monday):

• CHARITY: Donate a pearl or moonstone, conch shell, silver, water, cow’s milk or white rice to a female leader on Monday evening.

• FASTING: On Mondays, especially during Moon transits and major or minor Moon periods.

• MANTRA: to be chanted on Monday evening, especially during major or minor Moon periods.

  

RESULT

The planetary deity Chandra is pleased increasing mental health and peace of mind.
