Patanjali mantras


oṃ yogena cittasya padena vācāṃ 
malaṃ śarīrasya ca vaidyakena 
yo’pākarottaṃ pravarṇaṃ muninām 
patañjaliṃ praṇajalīranto’smi

ॐ योगेन चित्तस्य पदेन वाचां 
मलं शरीरस्य च वैद्यकेन 
योऽपाकरोत्तं प्रवर्णं मुनिनाम् 
पतञ्जलिं प्रणजलीरन्तोऽस्मि

Om, I bow to Sage Patanjali, who, through the yoga of the mind, brings clarity to speech, and through the science of medicine, removes the impurities of the body. He who has helped the great sages and guided them in their knowledge. I offer my respects with folded hands to Patanjali.




Breakdown of the Mantra:

"Om": The sacred sound or cosmic vibration, considered the essence of the universe and the beginning of all creation.

"Yogen Chittasya Padena Vacham":
This part of the mantra translates to:

  • "Yogen Chittasya" means "by the yoga of the mind" or "through the practice of yoga for the mind."
  • "Padena Vacham" means "by the word (or speech) of the Pad (a symbol of power or energy)."

"Malam Sharirasya Cha Vaidyakena":

This section praises Patanjali for his healing knowledge, as he is often regarded as the one who removed the physical ailments of the body, akin to a great healer or doctor (vaidya).

"Yopakarotaan Pravarnm Muneenam":

  • "Yopakarotaan" means "who helped" or "who served."
  • "Pravarnm Muneenam" refers to "the great sages or saints," indicating that Patanjali guided or assisted the wise sages in their spiritual and intellectual pursuits.

This part of the mantra honors Patanjali for his service to the spiritual masters (rishis or munis), helping them along their journeys.

"Patanjalim Pranjali Rantosmi":

  • "Patanjalim" refers to the sage Patanjali.
  • "Pranjali" is a term for "salutation" or "offering with folded hands."
  • "Rantosmi" means "I bow to" or "I offer my reverence."

This is the concluding line, where the speaker humbly offers salutations and reverence to Sage Patanjali.


Patanjali Ashtakshara Mantra
